Huntin Donuts is a project I started around 2011-2012 when studying at UMass. I was doing a fair amount of driving and in typical Bostonian fashion, almost always had an iced coffee with me at any time of the year.
In Massachusetts, there’s a Dunkin Donuts everywhere you go. I started noticing a price discrepancy in different parts of the state and planned my stops around the cheaper ones. I started to stop at new stores to see if it was cheaper there. Not before long, I had a glove compartment full of receipts and figured I’d keep track of it somehow.
I had been fooling around with a LAMP stack on my home server and figured this would be a fun project to test things out with. I had some experience in my internship configuring web servers and talking with databases through Java but this was my first time with MySQL, PHP, and Apache. Some of this project provided a basis for a lab or two I made when TAing at UMass.
Now it’s become a bit of a novelty when I’m in a new location and grab a coffee, to log the prices there. I have some API hooks in place for an Android app to post things easier on the go, but I’ll save that for a future post.
